Short BIO

I am currently in my second year of a Master of Science (MSc) in Bioinformatics at the University of Pretoria, under the supervision of Professor TP Makhalanyane.

During my BSc Honours degree (Microbiology, Bioinformatics) I contributed to a genome announcement publication in the Microbiology Resource Announcements of the American Society for Microbiology Journal (https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/MRA.01467-19)

Role in AtlantECO

My current research topic is developing a pipeline that associates mobile genetic elements with biogeochemical genes in metagenomic assembled genomes obtained from metagenomic samples. The aim is to develop a user-friendly, automated pipeline that elucidates the role played by mobile genetic elements in the dissemination of biogeochemical cycling genes. My research contributes to work package 5, understanding and predicting community interactions.

With a background in South African law, my ambition is to bridge the gap between science and the law by promoting sustainable, healthy ecosystems and engaging in reforms that promote economic growth while maintaining microbial health.
